Construction Work on Batavia Depot, 1938
Posted to History of the Peavine Railroad Facebook Group by Chad Fannin, September 1, 2019. Description from post.

Some August 23, 1938 N&W Engineering Department before and during photos of work being done at Batavia Station. They are getting ready to install the old Route 74 underpass and are showing what it looks like before the work is started. The depot itself is being raised and shimmed up with new retaining walls being installed. In the photo looking down road on Rt 74, across the tracks you can see a building with a sign that reads “Keen, coal and lumber Co”. There is a locomotive sitting in the station that only the tender and very little of the cab is visible. I’m going to take a shot at what type of locomotive this is. I think it’s either number 559 or 569, both are being listed as a N&W class E2a by the year 1938. They are 4-6-2 wheel arrangements and called Pacific class locomotives, 559 being built in the Roanoke Shops by the N&W in 1912 and 569 was built by the Richmond Locomotive Works in 1910. I’m going off the tender looks and window location on the cab but it’s still just a guess.
