Category Description:
The East Fork River Bridge in Batavia is the dominant railroad structure in the villiage these days. The prototype span is over 400 feet long and 70 feet high. The bridge is visuall interesting because it uses different spans to cross two state routes and the river.
The main pier in the middle of the river has sure seen its share of trains and history. Expecially the stone foundation. I believe the stone foundation for this bridge is the same one pictured in image 32 and image 33 below, the dramatic shots of the passenger car dangling off the bridge. Through some of the other photos you can see how the center pier has changed over the years.
A couple of other notes modeled on the layout. In picture 1618, you can see a small brick building under the second engine. I've always assumed that is/was a pumping station for the city to draw water from the river, but I don't know that. But that building is represented on the layour.
And in picture 1143, you see the gravel pull off on the side of state route 222. This is also depicted on the layout.
The bridge was modeled using multiple deck girder bridges from Micro Engineering. The piers are made from sheet styreen, and painted with watercolors to match the patterns of staining from photos.
