Category Description:
Half Acre Road is Afton's connection to the rest of the world, via State Route 32. From Half Acre, you can see the new Purina Plant still being built (as of Summer 2023) and the front of Cincinnati Milicron. When you reach the crossing, there are three features on the layout which are inspired by real life.
First, there is a small house on the north side of the crossing right along the tracks. And it is heavily sheltered by trees. The house has a small porch on the front, and pine trees that seclude it from the road. I've tried to recreate this house as best I could with a Rix Product Maxwell House kit.
The tracks at Half Acre are also the start of Afton Siding. This was a pivotal siding in my memories growing up, because it was a half acre that the N&W would drop the front half of grain trains doubling the hill. The engines were run along Afton Siding around the train to go back down the hill. My dad and I would sit at Half Acre and watch the two sections of the train come together before the train heads east. It was with very specific design that the switch starting afton siding was cut into Half Acre Road.
The third detail is the water tower. From the south side of the track, the water tower looms over the scene. I will eventually decal the water tower to include the inspiration quote painted on the side of the tower…
