Category Description:
An old edition of model railroaded featured a large club layout in Illinois. I'm not so sure it wasn't Batavia IL, and the being the reason it stuck in my head. But what I remember of that layout is they had a branch line that was designed in such a way that when operating the branch you were separated from the rest of the layout.
I wasn't quite able to pull off that separation, but modeling a branchline and including small time, light weight railroading away from the main was something I always wanted to do. The Hillsboro branch gave me the perfect opportunity to do this.
The Hillsboro Branch is intentionally designed with no passing sidings. Trains will be pushed out from Sardinia and pulled back. A caboose will be fitted to the end of the train with headlights and a horn for safety, a condition the local communities insisted on when activity started picking up again.
The line will terminate before Main Street in Hillsboro. I'll probably close the line off with a pile of ballest similar to how the Peavine is cut in real life. The depiction of Main Street and the paved over crossing representing how live moves on after the railroad is gone. Something the east end of the Peavine has been dealing with for twenty years.
