Comment from post… A few months ago, Preston Whitt showed us a current view of the area that was once Arion Tunnel in Scioto County- the only mainline tunnel on the Peavine. Here are two rare views of the actual tunnel. At left is a view from an old N&W Magazine from 1926, while on the right is perhaps the only actual photo of a train exiting the tunnel- courtesy of the late Ed Fannin Collection. In mid 1902, the work of daylighting the tunnel began as the clearance was too low for the ever increasing height of newer freight cars operated by the N&W, which purchased the line the previous year. There was at least one recorded fatal accident (1898) where a brakeman riding on top of a boxcar hit his head on the tunnel approach- his body was not discovered until the train reached Portsmouth. The daylighting took nearly one year to complete costing several thousands of dollars.
