On the evening of September 29, 1989 Amtrak's "The Crescent" (with 2 locomotives and 15 cars) collided with a fire truck responding to a fire at a rural crossing near Catlett, Virginia- about 50 miles from Washington DC. Tragically, two volunteer firefighters on that firetruck were killed, while three others suffered serious injuries. Of the 339 people on board the train (including train crew), 57 were injured. Following the usual investigations, the Amtrak equipment was sent to its shops in Beech Grove, Indiana for repairs a couple of weeks later. Arriving in Portsmouth from Kenova for an overnight stay, the "Amtrak Special" (as NS called it on the scanner) left Portsmouth for Cincinnati on the Peavine, where it transferred to Conrail trackage for the remainder of the trip to Beech Grove. As best as I can determine, this was the one and only time an Amtrak train traveled over the Peavine.
Along State Route 73 just west of Rarden. Pouring down rain which matched the mood of the horrific accident that caused this historic event in Peavine history.
