Dupps Rendering Cooker
|
|
This picture is the start of a "it's a small world" story.
This picture was taken on the siding leading back to the large John Morrell and Co. slaughter house and meat packing plant in Siuox Falls, SD. The item is a rendering oven, used to cook down by-products from the slaughter and processing of hogs.
The story part of this came several years later, as I settled on a story line for my freelanced model railroad. My railroad would use ex New York Central trackage from Carlisle, OH in the south and go north into Michigan. The first town along the line out of Carlisle is Germantown, that this is where what is left of the tracks ends today.
What was the mainline is now a siding, and at the end of that siding is the Dupps Company. I knew nothing about this when I went on a research trip to see what was left of the old NYC line. Imagine my surprise when I see a string of these Dupp's cookers sitting on the tracks, and realized the one I saw in Sioux Falls years prior probably started its journey from this plant.
