Bridge Over Ohio and Erie Canal
Posted to History of the Peavine Railroad Facebook Group by Roger Myers, July 29, 2019. Description from post.
Now this image from The Ackerman collection is on the Peavine at Rushtown. Rushtown, the "youngest" town in Scioto County, was founded by Levi Kirkenhall and named for Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Both the Ohio and Erie Canal and the Norfolk and Western Railroad were important to the economy of Rushtown. Large quantities of timber were shipped via the Ohio and Erie Canal in the late nineteenth century. The Norfolk and Western Railroad ran along the Brush Creek Valley, the flattest part of the Scioto River Valley. Rushtown was one of three stations on this line. This image is part of a larger collection of photographs assembled by Carl Ackerman, a long time resident of Portsmouth. Ackerman donated his collection to the Southern Ohio Museum in 1996.
