The Test Section
At this time, I was still debating if I wanted to do a double deck layout or not. I created this test section to try out reach and view lines.

The top is four foot long, which is not terribly important for this. It is 16 inches deep. The bottom four foot sections are 30 inches and 24 inches wide.

I knew for a double deck design I wanted the top deck offset from the front of the lower deck. Giving away a few inches on top would greatly reduce the interferance the upper deck would create with lower deck viewing. 16 inches is also convenient because you get three eight foot sections from a single 4x8 sheet of plywood.

The heights in this shot are 45 inches on bottom and 60 inches on top. These were the first and only heights I tested. I was very happy with the results. The final nail in the levels was the height of my walls are just over 93 inches. That meant the four foot length of a piece of hardboard would provide a backdrop from the lower deck to the top of the wall.

By the time I posted to picture to the web site, enough of the layout is built to know these dimensions are perfect for me. The upper deck has a nice ground level view while the lower deck isn't so low you have to bend over to reach it.
