Train Derailment In Ohio! Close Look At Railroad Accident On Main Line, Steel Does Bend & Break!
Train Derailed In Sardinia, Ohio. Freight Cars Toppled Over & The Track Was Ripped Up On The Norfolk Southern Peavine Line. The train wreck was between Mount Orab and Sardinia, Ohio. This is a short line railroad in southeast Ohio near my home. Cincinnati Eastern Railroad had a heavy rock train running westbound when about 10 cars of the approximate 30 car train derailed at Corboy Road. This is a rural area off Rt32. The next crossing to the west is Bean Road. That is the crossing that I use to own 5 acres but sold the land when NS announced that the line was being closed. It was closed a few years after that but reopened close to a year later to access a grain elevator. Since then the line has opened all the way to the quarry just past Peebles.

The train that derailed is the same train that I filmed on Friday running empty to the quarry. This train was led by a GP15-1 and the SD40-2 pulling about 30 cars. I didn't count them but the television news reported it as being 30 cars. The same news that said the train was carrying about 390 tons of gravel. Where did they get that? Each car weighs about 31 tons empty and can carry up to 70 tons of gravel for a total weight of up to 100 tons per car. They aren't filled to the top but 390 wasn't even close.

I don't know what caused the accident. It is too early and the investigation has not been done yet. It happened about 3:45pm. I was filming trains near Cincinnati including an Indiana & Ohio grain train on the Brookville Sub that day when I started getting texts about it. Check out my video of the I&O train when I post it soon. The train hit a chair that someone put next to the crossing right by the police station in West Harrison, Indiana. That branch is very lightly used and has light pound rail dated 1917 that you will see in the video.

One other thing about the train derailment. The train was going very slow when this happened. It also had an EOT. Right now only the rock trains have an EOT but in the future most of the trains will have one.

Filmed Tuesday, April 4, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!
