Return To Gallery Menu   Solar Panels On Ballast Cars? A work train at Hamilton had a long cut of what I believe are ballast cars with solar panels afixed to the sides and ends. After a little bit of research, I've seen the following explination, of which I do not know what is true: 1. they are no solar panels, they are part of a pnuematic door system used for loading the cars. 2. they are solar panels with batteries on the "A" end of the car. The power is used to control the door and prevent crew from opening the doors manually. 3. the are solar panels used to power GPS tracking equipment.
