Bridge Collapse at Batavia 1
|
|
Passenger car dangles off the bridge over the Little Miami River (East Fork River) at Batavia, OH. The accident happened shortly after the line was expanded from narrow gauge to standard gauge. The bridge was not able to handle the additional weight of the larger equipment. The engineer, sensing the collapse, was able to accelerate and get the engine off the bridge. The passenger car dangling off the bridge was saved by a broken rail wedging in the frame of the car, which kept it from falling. (information based on research of online sources).
