That was a breeze. Blew right thru the competition and howled in victory. I’m gonna need you to baton down the hatches and weather the storm on this one, I don’t get to use my wind puns very often in the Team of the Week section of the article.
Sea Breeze rocked like a hurricane this week, beating Prestige Worldwide 137-108. Brock Purdy led the way with 28 while cuz’ Cee Dee Lamb added 26. It is only the second win of the season for Sea Breeze, but is enough to get them out of last place in the Halas division and probably off the bottom of the power rankings, but we’ll have to wait and see about that.
Baker Mayfield was the Player of the Week, scoring 32.3 points for the Ohio State Buckeyes. The .3 was important, as the Buckeyes won the best game of the week, just barely nipping the Old England Patriots 101.5-101.3. Because I stayed up and watched the Monday night game last night, I happen to know this game turned in the last thirty seconds of the Monday nighter. The Steelers defense got an interception to end the game, and those two points pushed the Buckeyes over the top.
The Digital Scammers are making a claim for best team in the BMFFL. The Scammers beat Rimskis Raiders 123-97 behind the running of James Cook and the receiving of Tight End Kyle Pitts. Cook had 25 while Pitts added a very good 21. The Scammers are now 6-2, but not alone.
Tied with the Scammers at 6-2 are Steel City Fooball after a 106-82 win over the Gritz Blitz Falcons. George Kittle was game MVP with a rather modest 18. But every player in the FooBall lineup had at least 7.5 points, which adds up.
Hot on the heels of Steel City are the Cincinnati Eagles. The Eagles are 5-3 after a 114-92 win over the Willow Run Flyers. Josh Jacobs had 24 in the win for the Eagles. Despite being 5-3, the Eagles find themselves a game back in the Lombardi division.
The Baloony Boiz also advanced to 5-3. They beat Grande Fantasmas in the one and only divisional game this week. This was a battle for first place in the Paul Brown division. Kyler Murray led all scorers with 26. Rhomondre Stevenson added another 20. The win moves the Boiz into first place while Fantasmas drop to third a game back.
SURVIVOR
They hung in there a good long time. It’s been a good season for Grande Fantasmas. But this week a down performance caught up with ‘em. 62 points this late in the year will almost certainly get you blown off the island (had to get one more in). So long Grande Fantasmas.
THE KING RETURNS
Wow, that turned around quickly. Last week Titans Kingless Court was walking the plank off Survivor Island. This week they are the EWFFL Team of the Week. Titans Kingless Court
put a beat down on one of the best teams in the league. The Titans beat the Beercats 129-91. Led by Cee Dee Lamb (did I mention we might be related?) and Sam Darnold, who had 26 and 22 repectively. Devon Achane tacked on another 20. No wonder the Kingless Courts was so festive, with all their jesters having big days. The win gets the Titans back to 4-4, but still mired in third place in the Noll Division.
Another week where the Player of the Week was different in the two leagues. This time, Jalen Hurts was the BMOC, scoring 37 to lead Car Ramrod over Kickin Chicken. Hurts was by far the top scorer for Ramrod, but the rest of the team provided enough support to get past the pesky Chickens.
Blasted Transformation Worldwide won the closest game of the week. They beat the Secret Scammers 99-95. Josh Jacobs and Kyle Pitts had 24 and 21. These two teams are a good indication of being in the right division. Transformation is 5-3. The Scammers are 3-5. Both teams are in second place in their divisions.
Bane avoids the blue screen of death beating Error 404 125-88. Brock Purdy and James Cook had 28 and 25. Kirk Cousins accounted for nearly half of Error 404s point. He had 36 of the 88 points the team scored. Might be time for a team meeting.
Down the Drain thought they might be in the running for a TOW. In they end, they are third best this week in the EWFFL. But still a very solid win against the now 6-2 Momball. Drain wins the game 121-101. Lamar Jackson had 28. Cade Owen added 20. These teams are both in first place in their division, so they’ll be keeping an eye out for each other as the playoffs approach.
And I saved the Happiest outcome for last. Happy beats Shakedown 115-78. This turned into a blowout on Monday night, Tyrone Tracy erupted for 21 points. He was the leading scorer in the game. Happy is now 5-3 in the Shula division.
SURVIVOR
It has been a rough season for Shakedown, but to date they had avoided getting kicked off the island. That is until week 8. 78 points catches up with Shakedown and leaves then departing our beloved Survivor Island.
GAME OF THE WEEK
Week Nine is another divisional week on the schedule. Everybody is playing a rematch with a division rival. Specifically the division rival from the opening three weeks. For some, these are game to start putting teams away, for others these are last ditch efforts to stay in the race. But what I’m looking for our games between teams fighting for division crowns.
There are two matchups, one in each league that meet this criteria. In the BMFFL, Steel City FooBall goes on the road to play the Cincinnati Eagles. FooBall is 6-2 and first place in the Lombardi division. They are a game up on the second place Eagles. FooBall has a modest points advantage as well. If they were to win this week, they would essentially be two plus games ahead with only five to play. A very favorable spot for FooBall.
Both teams will have decisions to make at QB. For FooBall, is it CJ Stroud or Trevor Lawrence. With Najee Harris on bye, there is also a gap at running back to fill. For the Eagles, Caleb Williams is probably the choice over Jare Goff at QB. No such bye constraints for the Eagles.
Switching leagues, there is a very similar setup in the Shula division. The Beercats are first and Car Ramrod is a game back in second. Joe Burrow will probably be the starting QB for the Beercats. You feel like there is still a little more Joe can deliver to a fantasy team. For Car Ramrod, Jalen Hurts is coming off a big game with three rushing TDs, and maybe getting into the form that made him a top QB draft pick.
Neither team is crippled by byes, but the Beercats will lose Deebo Samuel to the off week. Based on early projections, it looks like the Beercats have an ever so slight advantage. This should be a really good game.
TOW LEAGUE BATTLE
Since I did a game from each league in the Game of the Week, I’ll take a moment to check the Team of the Week League Battle. The Edison Works lead held an early advantage. They won the first three. But the BMFFL has battled back and with Sea Breeze’s top game this week have pulled even at 4-4. So the battle for the dominant league will come down to the final six weeks, and I’ll need to figure out the tie breaker. I think it is highest scoring tame all season, which currently leans towards… wait for it… the EWFFL with Momball’s 149 in week three.
